Grid layout designs

I love grids. Here is the first one I did for Fidelity — before that, layout on Fidelity.com was entirely in the eye of the designer/beholders, and that made redesigning and managing the site difficult. It’s based on twelve columns for flexibility – twelve is easily divisible by 2, 3, 4 and 6 – and was designed for a 800 x 600 resolution, which was the emerging standard in the year 2000 when this grid was created.

Fidelity grid: 2000-2008

Below are some of the legacy documents that I used to explain the grid to my development partners and new designers. They are of course dated — all of the browser measurements were based on the versions of Netscape and IE that were in use at the time.
